Hey Lashers, I have an African American woman coming in in a few weeks and would like some tips please. She has very short (7mm) natural lashes with a very heavy curl on the outer 1/2 of the lash line. Her lashes are also very fine. Just wondering if anyone had reccomendations on how to tackle those curly lashes and what to use. Thanks a bunch AJ ----------

I would reach for my J-Curls or B-Curls. Don't expect to be able to adhere the natural lash completely, as it will need to break away from the natural curl 1/2 way down from the base.

Hi, I have several Black ladys. It can be frustrating when they are really curly but one lady I do hers is really short and very very thin and light, so hard to even see. I learn the hard way that not to use a heavy lash. my other ones look great but hers gave me a fit so when I went lighter it helped

Okay. Just a thought. Maybe somebody can take this to the next level. Perming and straightening is a similar process, isn't that right? Just differing end results. How about giving her lashes an UN-perm & then lashing them? Its just a thought. jp ----------

and use a large roller....? Good idea Jill. Just won't be able to continue with the perming unless she goes for a new set every 6-8 weeks. My AA women have very curly lashes but are able to handle the C .2's. I find that the C's marry very well with their curled lashes. But if she has thin lashes, then use the .15's The results are simply beautiful. ----------

You can do the un-perm but you need to piggy back the rods...they do not make large enough rods to do a straightening unless her lashes are very short...I do lash perms all the time..but on some clients I prefer the C Good Luck!

Umm - No Scott You can't put C-Curls on natural curly lashes. They end up forming almost a complete circle! But then with all you hands on experience, I thought you would already know that? LOL

Thanks for all the advice everyone! Definately picked up some good tips! I've started her on the RevitaLash, I think that will help to strengthen her lashes. The un-perming sounds like a great idea. Unfortunately I don't do it and it's not allowed in the State of Ohio. =( She's in in about 2 weeks (after Labor Day). So I'll let you all know how it went! AJ ----------

Hi alexis, Maybe she can get the 'unperm' done at a professional shop/location over the state line. I would not extend her lashes as long as premier recommended. Doubling + her natural length will not be a successful venture. My old NovaLash trainer said to 'relax' extra curly lashes by applying a hot towel. You could try that *and* straightening (as opposed to *curling*) with a heated eyelash curling wand; smoothing them straight. Even if it doesn't effect a 100% difference, it'll help, and then you could carefully extend, paying close attention to the base & as far up the natural lash as humanly possible. If there is a bit of flip at the tip that you can't reign in, let it go. Don't overextend (only give about 30-40% extra length - that means if her lashes are about 7mm, go to a 9mm - 10mm at the very most- extension). Try the B-curls. don't use too thick an extension. Personally, I would start with .15 x 8, 9 & 10mm. Use minks if you need depth of color to make up for the lack of volume - although word of warning - you might have to curl a j-curl mink or straighten out a c-curl mink. Make sure you schedule extra time, as in the beginning you might have to try different things to get r dun. If you can get a successful look going for this gal, you will probably have a client for life - and she will walk/talk loud and proud of her lash stylist. (ya gotta love a challenge!) Let us know how it goes! jp ----------

I agree with Jill and Tami. Sorter and sweet. You can try after a while and see if she holds on to a longer lash. I always chat it up with my clients and give them a knowledge about their lashes and extensions. I explain what I am doing and what would be ideal and how we can play a bit and try something out. To my african american clients I tell them what challenges they *may* have with holding on to the extensions if they have very curly and small lashes. They always appreciate it and if they fall off a bit sooner than we like we make adjustments the next time. I like to attach either underneath or to the side of a natural lash if they are overly curly. Whichever way I can get the most surface area of adhesion.
